This presentation places US-Mexico border theory in the larger context of global discourses about contemporary human border crossings. Prof. Sadowski-Smith will discuss how a growing body of writing about border crossings to the United States and the European Union complicates at times remarkably similar public debates that emphasize cultural, ethnic, or religious differences between migrants and host populations.
Claudia Sadowski-Smith is Associate Professor of English at Arizona State University. She is the author of Border Fictions: Globalization, Empire, and Writing at the Boundaries of the United States (University of Virginia Press, 2008) and The New Immigrant Whiteness: Neoliberalism, Race, and Post-Soviet Migration to the United States (NYU Press, 2018).
