Personal and Professional Background

  • Before moving to Germany taught at the University of Washington, initially as Assistant Professor of English, then as tenured Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature.
  • First lived in Europe in 1968/9 on research fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
  • Visiting Professor of English at University of Tübingen (1972/3) and at Hamburg University (1973/4).
  • Professor of English at Bonn University since 1974; Professor Emeritus since 2004. 
  • Vice President of the Robert Lowell Society
