DESCRIPTION:In December 2024\, the British Council celebrated its 90th ann
 iversary. Founded in 1934\,\nwith the first overseas offices opening in 19
 38\, we are the world’s oldest cultural relations\norganization. The ear
 ly 1930s were a time of global instability. Britain’s influence was\nwea
 kened because of a global financial depression and at the same time\, extr
 eme ideologies\nwere gaining ground\, with the rise of Communism in Russia
 \, and Fascism in Germany\,\nItaly and Spain. The UK government created th
 e British Council in response. From\nour annual report for 1940-41\, the a
 im was: ‘to create in a country overseas a basis of\nfriendly knowledge 
 and understanding of the people of this country\, of their philosophy\nand
  way of life\, which will lead to a sympathetic appreciation of British fo
 reign policy\,\nwhatever for the moment that policy may be and from whatev
 er political conviction it may\nspring.’ ....
