 records written in Old Breton were glosses in the early Middle Ages. Howev
 er\, documentation remains scarce until the 15th century\, during the Midd
 le Breton period. It has been suggested that Breton evolved continuously f
 rom a relatively uniform language into a multitude of local dialects from 
 the 16thcentury onwards. This variation was documented by dialectologists 
 in the 20th century. A quantitative or dialectometric analysis of material
  based on the most recent linguistic atlas\, the Nouvel atlas linguistic d
 e la Basse-Bretagne (Le Dû 2001)\, yielded results that offer new perspec
 tives for reassessing the emergence of the Breton language and its dialect
