Tjorven Halves, M.A.

Research Assistant

PhD Student

I am a PhD student and Research Assistant (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin) on the project English as a local lingua franca in the multilingual ecology of Northeast India, supervised by Prof. Dr. Robert Fuchs

My research interests are World Englishes, grammatical and sociolinguistic variation, and learner English. In my work, I mainly use corpus linguistic and quantitative approaches.

My PhD project is on the role of English in Northeast India. I aim to determine how dimensions of social variation and dominant language constellations affect the region’s spoken English variety. Results can shed light on the use of English in this highly multilingual region of India and demonstrate how the integration of quantitative corpus analysis with extensive speaker metadata can contribute to the study of variation in world Englishes.
