Interdisciplinary Workshop: Language, Discourse and Power Structures (LanDPoSts) in (De-)Democratization (25-26 June, 2025) Interdisciplinary Workshop: Language, Discourse and Power Structures in (De-)Democratization (25-26 June, 2025)

An interdisciplinary workshop from national and international experts on issues concerned with the processes of democratization and/or dedemocratization as reflected in and driven by language and discourse

The LanDPoSts Workshop on “Language, Discourse and Power Structures in (De-)Democratization”, headed by Prof. Dr. Svenja Kranich and the LETS-Team, took place on the 26-27 of June in the Festsaal at the University of Bonn. The workshop was part of an interdisciplinary cooperation between researchers in various fields and universities. There were insights into research on how societies negotiate social, political, cultural, and economic power structures and how this is reflected in linguistic, discursive, and social forms. The workshop showcased studies from professional research of our very own university, as well as several contributions from professors and lectures of other national and international universities. We were also happy to include student papers from our university that deal with the general topic of (de-)democratization in a poster session.

The interdisciplinary workshop (LanDPoSts) in (De-)Democratization brings together research from national and international experts on issues concerned with the processes of democratization – seen as a process which increases equality and inclusion – and/or dedemocratization – viewed as the exclusion of groups from power and participation and reinforcement of hierarchies, which furthers exclusionary or discriminatory practices – as reflected in and driven by language and discourse.

This workshop is part of a large-scale cooperative research project between researchers in various fields and from several universities, headed by Prof. Dr. Svenja Kranich, Chair of Linguistics of English and Translation Studies (LETS). We are proud to be supported by the Transdisciplinary Research Area "Individuals and Societies"1 by the University of Bonn.
